چکیده

In this work, different extracts from the microalga Spirulina platensis are obtained using Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) and four different solvents (hexane, petroleum ether, ethanol and water). Different extraction temperatures (115oC and 170oC) were tested using extraction times ranging from 9 to 15 minutes. The antioxidant activity of the different extracts is determined by means of an in-vitro assay using a free radical method. Moreover, a new and fast method is developed using Micellar Electrokinetic Chromatography with Diode Array Detection (MEKCDAD) to analyze the composition of the extracts. This combined application (i.e., in-vitro assays plus MEKC-DAD) allowed the fast characterization of the extracts based on their antioxidant activity and the UV-Vis spectra of the different compounds found in the extracts. To our knowledge, this work shows for the first time the great possibilities of the combined use of ASE-in vitro assay-MEKC-DAD to investigate natural sources of antioxidants.

Quantitation of chiral amino acids from microalgae by micellar electrokinetic chromatography and laser induced fluorescence detection

Running Title: Chiral analysis of microalgae amino acids by MEKC-LIF ABSTRACT In this work, a chiral and a non-chiral micellar electrokinetic chromatography with laser-induced fluorescence detection (MEKC-LIF) have been combined to identify and quantify a group of D-and L-amino acids (D/L-aa) in different microalgae samples. The combination of the non-chiral and chiral-MEKC-LIF methods made eas...

Environmental Assessment of Industrially Applied Drying Technologies for the Treatment of Spirulina Platensis

Spirulina platensis is a high protein content cyanobacterium with known therapeutic properties. Its main protein Phycocyanin is currently as a functional ingredient into various food products to enhance their nutritional qualities acting as food colorant, antioxidant and emulsifier, reducing the use of synthetic additives. The post-harvest treatment of the microalga affects its content of prote...

Neuroprotection by Spirulina platensis protean extract and phycocyanin against iron-induced toxicity in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells.

We investigated the effect of Spirulina platensis protean extract and the biliprotein phycocyanin isolated from this microalga, on the activities of the antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, GPx, and GR, lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity and glutathione levels after the iron induced oxidative stress in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Iron is one of the most important agents that produce oxidative str...
